Substitute Teaching

Substitute teaching Pre-K through grade 12 has been a true learning experience, packed with both challenges and joys. Pablo Picasso once said, "good artist copy, great artists steal." Across the city of Chicago, I have been stealing lesson ideas, scheduling techniques, transition modes, teaching methods, and more for just over a year. In the meantime, students stole pieces of my heart from the South Side, West Side, and North Side alike.

high school

I began substitute teaching in Chicago November of the 2015-2016 school year. I spent a majority of 2016 working at Disney II Magnet High School.

Disney II caters to grades 7-12 and I got experience with all of them. Not only was I fortunate enough to teach these amazing kids, I was also hired to coach their first JV Softball Team. Check out the Softball Scrapbook by clicking the button below.

I have also had the opportunity to teach at other high schools across Chicago, including: Roosevelt High School,Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center, Lane Tech College Prep, Lakeview High School, Crane Medical Prep, and Michelle Clark High School.

Middle School

During the 2016-2017 school year, I became a regular sub. in Mrs. Duncan's 6th grade science class. Since the class had been studying erosion, I went home during lunch and brought back some artifacts for them to investigate.

While I love teaching at the secondary level, I am both thankful and humbled by how much I gained from substitute teaching at the Elementary Level. I learned a ton from other educators during this experience. I was able to study classrooms: the set-up, structure, routines, teaching methods, materials, so on and so fourth. As I began returning to the same schools, I also got to know these teachers, administrators, and  staff.

tutoring as a sub.

The Principals at Patrick Henry Elementary, Mr. Juan Gutierrez and Mrs. MaryAnn Munozmaciel, are incredible. Towards the end of the school year, they spoke to all teachers and asked how they could be further assisted.

The teachers responded as most would, that they wished they were able to devote more time to particular groups of students on both ends of the spectrum: those who are excelling and could use a greater challenge, as well as those who were struggling to keep up and would benefit from some individual teaching attention.

In turn, Mr G. and I discussed my background and qualifications. He then concluded that I would be best utilized as an English Tutor to 5th grade English Language Learners struggling to keep up with their classmates, as well as 1st grade ELL's learning how to read. I also aided 3rd grade students who were excelling in ELA and needed a greater challenge. Furthermore, three different 3rd grade classes asked for assistance with math.

And so, every Tuesday and Thursday for approximately 12 weeks, I saw the same groups of students for English Language Arts and varies small groups of students for 3rd grade math. Some teachers provided me with all the materials I would need. Others gave me the freedom to teach my own lessons .

To put it simply, this was an amazing learning opportunity for me and these students quickly stole my heart. I sincerely hope I get to have these young people in my own high school classroom someday. They are incredible!
