Community Service

Community service and outreach is a civic duty. As such, I try to do my part while integrating it into my teaching as well. After all, community service is good for the planet, great for others, and more often than not, beneficial for the self.

In the Fall of 2016, I began working part-time as a Production Assistant for Hoopla, an Event Planning Company servicing non-profits. My work with this company has yielded some of the most enriching service work I have ever participated in. I am proud to say that I have helped raise money and awareness for countless organizations, including but not limited to the following:

ChiCat, or Chicago Center for Arts and Technology, is a newly formed after-school program offering advanced education and experience with traditional drawing and painting, as well as digital technologies, such as film, photography, 3-D printing, laser printing, and more.

The Chicago ACE Mentor Program is a competitive after-chool educational program for high school students interested in architecture, construction, and engineering. Students are placed in teams with professionals in their areas of interest to gain hands-on education and experience.

Human Rights Watch is a worldwide nonprofit, nongovernmental human rights organization. It is best known for fact-finding, reporting, and advocacy. HRW meets with governments, the United Nations, and regional groups, financial institutions, and corporations to encourage changes in policy and practice to promote human rights and overall justice around the world.

Outdoor Empowered Network is a national organization connecting and supporting various programs that, "GET YOUTH OUTDOORS." The OEN primarily offers Outdoor Leadership training and helps facilitate Gear Libraries (i.e.: tents, sleeping bags, outdoor apparel, and other hiking or camping equipment) that can be stored and used year after year.

IL Safe Schools Alliance is a nonprofit organization that promotes safety and support for the healthy development of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in Illinois schools and communities. They accomplish this goal through advocacy, education, youth organizing, summer camps, and research.

Student Involvement

Not only do I participate in community service, but I also encourage my students to as well. In the past, my students and I have participated in art activism via the One Million Bones Project. Students have also chosen various community service projects, such as organizing beach cleanups, recycling programs, and so on. Many have also contributed time and effort to The Special Olympics
